Dr. Liz McCullagh

I have a very diverse background, in no small part due to the curiosity about the world that my parents and teachers imparted in me. This curiosity lead me to pursue a masters in Biology at Virginia Tech (with John Phillips) studying whether mercury contamination impacts feather microstructure and color. However, I’ve always been interested in Neuroscience and understanding behavior. I got my PhD in Neurobiology at the University of Illinois Chicago (with David Featherstone) studying how a mutation in a gene in the brain might lead to alterations in behavior. Finally, I was a postdoc at the University of Colorado Anschutz (with Achim Klug) learning about the auditory system. The aims of my lab at Oklahoma State University are to use the auditory system to better understand functioning of the brain using diverse organisms, changes to the brain that occur in autism, and manipulations using modern neuroscience techniques.

Luberson Joseph, PhD candidate

Major: PhD Candidate in Integrative Biology

Past degree: MSc in Biodiversity Conservation and Sustainable Development

Main Scientific Interests: My research centers on questions related to how social behavior and hormones (AVP and OT) in the brain shape hearing of mammals, using wild rodents as model system. I have a broad interest in many ecological questions and organisms and seek to conduct sound and interesting science to understand the ecology of aquatic and terrestrial organisms and work toward their preservation.

In my spare time, I love going to the beach, reading, listening to music, visiting new places, hanging out with my friends, and play video games.

Jesse Hurd, PhD candidate

Major: PhD Student – Integrative Biology

Major Scientific Interests: Reproductive biology, behavioral neuroendocrinology, and olfactory processing. I research how the social environment impacts reproductive physiology and behavior in the monogamous prairie vole, specifically via modulation within the olfactory system.

Something I Do for Fun:  I love long road trips with my partner, binge-reading fiction novels in one sitting, and artwork.

Andrea Gensky, PhD candidate

Major: PhD candidate – Integrative Biology

Past degree: MS Animal Sciences

Major Scientific Interests: endocrine, reproductive, and the nervous systems!

Something I do for fun… I’m a total hermit and LOVE staying home and doing things around the house/yard! Also like to exercise and read!

Casey Sergott, PhD candidate

Major: PhD student Integrative Biology

received MS in IB in Summer 2024

Main scientific interests: Broadly I am fascinated by how different animals behave, communicate, and process sounds in their environment. More specifically, I’m interested in the relationship between external morphological features and auditory function, as well as any implications for animal communication.

I love spending time with friends, family, my two cats. I also love to hike and be outdoors, listen to music, and go thrift shopping.

Genesis Alarcon, PhD student

Major: PhD in Biology

Major Scientific Interests: Neurobiology and neural anatomy. I enjoy looking at myelination and brain regeneration in neurodevelopment. I also enjoy looking at how excessive noise effects behavior and sound localization differences.

For fun I like to play any sports but particularly basketball, weight lift, play the violin, and watch reality TV with friends.

Major: MS Integrative Biology

Lab Interests: I am most interested in how sensory processing within the nervous system shapes an organism’s experience of the world around it.

Something I do for fun: I love anything outdoors-hiking,camping,backpacking. I enjoy practicing yoga and am part of a master’s rowing team. I can also totally enjoy a slow day at home with my 2 cats.

Anastacia Simmons

Major: Pre-Med Physiology

I am interested in learning about Neurology, especially how brain cells are affected by all five senses. I hope to one day become a neurosurgeon, operating on the human brain. I love how diverse and different brain activity can be and want to study all the different things that affect it in certain ways.

In my free time, I love to read books, go on walks, and spend quality time with my plants!Something I do for fun: Besides science, I also love golf, hiking, chess, and my bloodhound beagle Bella!

Laci Wright

Major: Biology – Pre-Med, minor: Spanish

Freshman Research Scholar

Research Interest:  Auditory Processing Disorders, mapping of the sound pathway and finding broken or altered areas, genetic mapping of hearing disorders, any research to do with hearing disorders and/or the loss of hearing abilities. Being Hard-of-Hearing myself, this field is very fascinating and I want to learn more about the field to understand myself better anatomically and genetically.

Fun activities:  In my spare time I love to read any fiction or mystery books I can get my hands on. I also love to binge medical drama shows such as Grey’s Anatomy and House M.D.  If I’m not inside, I love being outdoors playing soccer or participating in the Cowboy Marching Band.

Gracie Toben

Major: Biochemistry with a minor in neuroscience.

My main research interests are neurodegenerative diseases and neuroendocrinology. I enjoy learning about the interactions between hormones and the central nervous system.

Fun activities: In my free time, I like to read, explore new book shops and tea shops, and watch sports (mainly football) with my friends.

Grant Emerson

Major: Physiology Pre-Med

Scientific interests: I am really interested in neuroscience, specifically in children. I plan on attending medical school to become a physician.

For Fun: I really enjoy being outdoors with my friends playing golf, baseball, and basketball. I also love to travel, watch movies, and spend time with my family.

Lucas Boren

Major: Psychology Pre-Med with a minor in Neuroscience

Scientific Interests: I am fascinated by the staggering complexity of the nervous system and how it impacts behavior, and I hope to gain a more intimate knowledge of the subject through hands-on work in the lab.

Hobbies: In my free time, I like to rock climb, play the clarinet, and hang out with friends.

Olivia Emerson

Major: Physiology (Pre-Med)

Main Scientific Interests: I am interested in neurological research along with the study of how the alteration of processes or chemicals affects the brain and body. I plan on going to medical school to become a physician.

Fun Activities: I love to spend time with my family, bake, read, and work out. I also love traveling, specifically hiking and going to National Parks.

Ashlee Munoz

Major: Biology Pre-Medical Sciences

I have not started research, but I look forward to learning more about neuroanatomy and getting to observe surgeries.

During my free time, I like to spend time with friends, and binge tv shows

Agustin Delgado
